A Christmas Ornament

I love this time of year. I love decorating, crafting, baking and spending time with family. I love putting up the Christmas tree because all the ornaments remind me of friends, family and adventures we've been through.

Here is an ornament I made using ribbon and this weeks sketch by Allison Davis. I love that this can be made from little scraps of ribbon and felt. Be sure to check out all the other amazing projects the team came up with this week. Truly inspiring. Merry Christmas!

I am proud to announce that I made the 2012 Sketch Support Creative Team. This is one of my favorite entries for the call. I am so far behind on posting my layouts, so I thought that I would just post them all at once. These are my most recent Christmas and Winter layouts. These are the projects my boys made with me one night. They had fun getting to use my stuff and make a mess. I'm getting better at letting them use my scrapbook supplies. It was a lot to fun creating with them.

"Fall"

Fall is my favorite season of the year. I think it is my favorite because it was the season I feel in love with my husband. I love the colors, smells, sounds and temperature. I love football games, hayrides, nature hikes, evening walks and watching the sun set. I like playing outside with my kids because it's not too hot and not too cold. I enjoy taking pictures of the foliage and pumpkins. These are photos of Hayden at a friends birthday party at Carmichael's Pumpkin Patch from a couple of years ago.

The leaves on the layout were pieced together by following Allison's Add-On Sketch from a few weeks back. Her sketches are so fun to work with and keep me from getting bored from doing things the same way layout after layout. Check out her sketches for more inspiration.

Tonight I went shopping and to Barnes and Noble with a friend. I finally got my hands on the December issues of Cards magazine, Cricut magazine and Scrapbook Trends magazines. This is the first time I've been published!

Simple Stories Birthday Cards and a Mini Album

Here are some Simple Stories cuties that I made back in October that I forgot to post. Looking back through all these projects, I realized that I also have the most adorable Birthday banner to show you that I haven't even taken a picture of yet! So check back later this week to see the banner.

Here are three Birthday cards and instructions for making a toilet paper mini album.

"Eat Cake" card instructions:

Cut red polka dot paper to 5 1/2 x 4 1/4"
Cut kraft cardstock to 4 3/4 x 3 1/2"
Punch striped scallop border and cut to 1/2 x 4 3/4"
Cut out cake card
Ink the edges of all paper and assemble as shown.
Use 3D dots to raise the cake card.
Add stickers, ribbon and add stickles.

"It's your day!" card instructions:

Cut red polka dot paper 1 1/4 x 4 1/4 and punch scallop border 1/2 x 4 1/4.\
Cut kraft paper 4 1/4 x 4/14.
Cut striped paper 1/4 x 4 1/4".
Cut pennants from left to right 5/8, 3/4 and 5/8" x 1 1/2" and knotch the ends.
Cut out the present and attach with 3D pop dots then add stickles.
Ink the edges of all your paper.
Add the sentiment sticker
Add faux stitching with a black pen as shown.

"Celebrate!" card instructions:

Cut red polka dot paper 4 1/4 x 5 1/2"
Cut kraft paper 3 3/4 x 5"
Cut candles 2 3/4", 3" and 3 1/4"
Cut striped paper 3/4 x 4 1/4
Draw and cut out flames from orange paper.
Ink the edges of all your paper and assemble as shown.
Tie ribbon
Cut out the sentiment and attach.
Add stickles to the flames.

"Surprise Party" toilet paper mini album:

Paint 5 TP rolls yellow and let dry.
Fold TP rolls in half and measure.
Machine stitch 1/2" from end of each roll creating a pocket.
Punch two holes in each for metal rings.
Tie ribbons around rings.
Ink the edges of all paper.
Cut 10 background mats and 5 tags 1/2" shorter than TP length and 1/4" shorter TP height.
Round the corners of the tags.
Cut 10 top mats 1/4" shorter on both sides than the previous mat.
Cut tabs 3/4" x 1 1/2", attach to tags and add sticker words as shown.
Embellish with stickers and stickles.

This Birthday Journal was a fun project to make. I am always forgetting birthdays and I'm hoping that recording them in this journal will help me remember them better.

I started by covering my journal with Kraft paper and inking the edges. Using Allison's card sketch and Simple Stories paper and cardstock stickers, I embellished the front.

I then created an elastic paper bookmarker. I saw something similiar on www.skiptomylou.org via Pinterest that was made with ribbon. I immediately started thinking of how I could use scrapbook paper to create something similiar. I love paper! It's kind of like a headband for a book.

To create the bookmarker, I wrapped elastic around the inside of the cover and cut. Be sure not to pull it tight. I marked the length of the book on the middle of the strip of elastic. I cut 3 strips of paper measuring 1-1/4" x 12", moistened and crinkled them up. Let set 5 minutes and then open. Fold and stitch to the center of the elastic that you previously marked. My paper was only slightly damp when stitched it. I only used about 2 1/2 of the strips once it was all folded and stitched into ruffles. Finally, overlap the ends of the elastic about 1/2- 3/4" using a zig zag stitch. Place on your book.

I then added months of the year tabs. I printed them on kraft paper, folded them in half, rounded the corners and attached to the edges of the paper. I divided the number of pages in the notebook by 12 months. In my notebook, I placed a new tab every 8-9 pages. My finished tabs measured 1/2 x 1".

I won't bore you with all the details, but it has a lot to do with buying a house, appliances not working, raising 3 little boys and just general life stuff. I'm hoping things will slow down a bit in the coming weeks so I can get back to scrapbooking.

This is one of the projects for our Simple Stories challenge on Sketch Suppport. I really had a lot of fun working with the Happy Day collection. Although it is primarily a birthday themed collection, I used it with photos from a Christmas photo shoot at the park. I followed Allison's sketch with just a few minor changes.

I created the patch work border along the bottom by cutting 1x1" squares and then zig zag stitching them together, which kind of gives it a homey touch. I also covered the heart with burlap and stitched it in place to add texture to the layout. I then added the stitched "3" and buttons to embellish.

For the journaling spot, I cut out the inside of a 6x8" card, used my hole punch on the scallop edges and then crazy stitched around the edges. I then replaced 2 of the horizontal strips with zipper trim.

Journaling reads, " These are the photos that didn't make the cut for our Christmas card, but I think they are my favorites. I like them because they show the process we go through to get a good photo. They also show my little boys individual personalities; the good, the bad and the ugly. Woodward Park Fall '09. This is a perfect example of a project gone wrong. I started out making a cute little Halloween card. I then got a little crazy with the sewing machine and stitched one side completely shut before I realized my mistake. Rather than trashing my project and starting anew, I adjusted my original plan.

This is my modern day version of a Halloween tussie mussie. I've heard of some that play a game with their neighbors by leaving a Halloween treat at their door, ringing the doorbell and then running away. It usually has a note on it that says, "You've been Booed! I think it's a fun idea, but I can't see me doing it with any of my neighbors.

I left the top open to hold several Pixy Stix and stitched a ribbon at the top so it can hang. I thought this would be a cute alternative to give someone on Halloween instead of a traditional card. The Pixy Stix can be pushed down into the card and it will fit in an envelope. It can be hung on a door or a bulletin board to brighten any space.

I often say, "There are no mistakes in scrapbooking, just opportunities to embellish." I definitely embellished on this project. I tried to use a mess up as a creative challenge. I had fun nonetheless.

I love all the layering of papers in this week's sketch. I adjusted a couple of the measurements of the strips of paper in order to work with my specific papers and I adjusted the layout of my photos. I used a 4x5" photo in the portrait orientation rather that the landscape orientation as suggested in the sketch. I also used larger 4x4" supporting photos.

I used a couple of die-cuts in the location of the journaling on the sketch and then placed my journaling strips to the left overlapping the photos.

For the most part, the embellishments are in the same location as the sketch, but I omitted the flags. I added 3D foam adhesive to the die-cut shapes and also added red, yellow and green brads to mimic the stop light. I created a frame around the layout with machine stitching, that creates a tighter focus on the photos. I also added decorative random stitching to the pattern papers.

Journaling reads, "I am always trying to figure out why you are upset. I've come to the conclusion that you always have a plan for how you want things to go and when they don't go your way, you cry. You are a sweet, determined little boy. You just need to learn some coping skills. You will go far."

I have a really bad habit of printing off several copies of my favorite photos of my boys with good intentions of framing some and giving others to their grandparents. This leaves me with a lot of extra photos. I used this weeks sketch to create a mini album for all those extra favorite photos I have of my youngest son Jackson.

I used a collection of Flip Notes by Pink Paislee for the base of my mini album. I removed and measured the acrylic cover so that I would know what size to make my camera. I adjusted the add-on sketch measurements to fit my album, inked the edges and added decorative stitching. I punched holes in the bottom of my camera and added the camera and acrylic cover back in the mini album.

I placed my photos on the pages and added cardstock stickers and alphabets to embellish the pages.

When I saw this months add-on sketch, I remembered that I had these photos of Jackson from last winter playing with his toy camera. How amazing is it that I actually had photos to go with the sketch? I was excited!

The overall size of this camera is about 2x3". I inked the edges of all the paper. I added 3D foam adhesive to the camera lenses.

The title is a quote that I loved, "Beauty in things exists in the mind which contemplates them." David Hume

Journaling reads, "During the snow storms last winter, I took a lot of pictures. I guess someone was watching me, because Jackson decided to take some pictures of his own with his toy camera of the birds eating seeds outside our playroom."

This card measures 4 1/4 x 5 1/2. On this card, I kept the background basically the same as the sketch and stitched around the edges. I lowered the stripes of paper so that they were centered. Instead of adding three embellishments, I used one flower with a sentiment. I attached the flower with 3D foam adhesive and added rhinestones around the circle. I then added twine tied into a bow along the bottom.

This card measures 4 1/4 x 5 1/2". I cut my background piece, punched a border along the bottom and machine stitched around the edge. I hand cut 3 flowers and attached them to a 1 inch strip of yellow paper using 3D foam adhesive. I possitioned it toward the bottom to allow room for my satin bow. I then added self adhesive crystals to brighten it up a bit.

One-page Sketch week at Sketch Support

I was so excited to use this sketch as a starting point for my layout. I keep all the measurements of the paper the same, but added 1-1/2 x 11 strips of paper to the top and bottom for additional layering. I kept my photos in the same location.

The company I use to print my photos does a great job, but the photos aren't the full 6" wide. They are about 5-3/4" instead. Since I was given this challenge, I cropped about 1/2" off the ends and positioned them to the left and then filled in the space with a lucky card from the October Afternoon Miscellany pack, a star and a few buttons.

I loved the cute title banner on the sketch. I used the sticker pennants from this collection and stitched across the top as the sketch suggested. I then added my chipboard alphas and stitched through them several times.

I replace the 3 smaller photos with one larger photo and embellished with a sticker tag threaded with twine and a journal spot. I also added a ruler sticker toward the bottom.

I finished the layout by adding machine stitching and journal strips.

"Cooper was only 16-1/2 months when Jackson was born. I was worried that he was going to be forced to grow up too soon and not be allowed to be a baby. People told me they would be buddies growing up and not to worry. He was so sweet loving on the baby. Three sweet babies."

This card was inspired by the banner and the stitching from the sketch. I cut pennants from various pattern papers, inked the edges and attached them to the top of the card.

I then sewed around the card and stitched three lines across the top. I centered and attached my image using 3D adhesive and placed my sentiment in the lower corner.

This layout was based on one of Allison's bonus sketches that she made for us during the month of May when we celebrated National Scrapbook Day all month long. I currently have this thing for banners. I will put one on just about any scrapbook layout.

The first thing I did was machine stitch a frame around the edge of my background. I discovered from a fellow scrapbooker that heavy duty upholstery thread made from nylon or polyester works great for sewing on paper. It is thicker, so it is more visible on the layout.

The next step was layering the border. When sewing on layouts, you want to try to avoid sewing through adhesive. Use only what is necessary and position it so that your needle doesn't have to go through it. If you do sew through it, try to clean your needle immediately, so that it won't gum up your sewing machine.

I stitched my border and then attached it to my layout. This reduced the number of papers my needle had to sew through. Paper can dull needles, so it is a good idea to have certain needles that are specifically for paper. My sewing machine specialist recommended the Janome size 14 Red Tip universal needle for my machine. It provides the extra strength and durability needed for thicker fabrics (and paper in my case). It is equipped with a larger eye, which helps to prevent thread breakage.

I then created my banner by folding 1/4 inch of the pendants back over the jute and machine stitched through the jute and paper pendants. I attached the banner to the page and then added the buttons and bows.

One of the final sewing touches I added was the journaling lines. This is the first time I've ever sewn them on a layout before. It was a bit tricky getting them all the same length, but I think it added a nice touch to the page.

When I first saw this sketch, I knew I wanted to switch it up and scrapbook some Halloween photos of my boys. I also wanted to try stitching a spider web on the right side of the layout.

Overall, I stayed true to the sketch, other than changing the theme and adding extra embellishments. I started by placing my layered border at the bottom and adding the fence.

Using Design studio, I made my fence 3 inches wide and placed 4 fence panels side by side across the page to give me a 12 inch fence. I used ink to distress them a bit.

I added the vertical strips and then lightly drew the spider web design with a pencil. Using my paper piercer and a piercing mat, I poked holes in my paper. Be careful not to bend and warp your paper when hand stitching. The end result won't be pretty. I then put on a really good, long movie and started stitching.

The inspired design for the spider web came from one of the die cut papers in this Halloween collection from We R Memory Keepers called Spookville.

After I finished stitching, I added my photos and attached my journal spot using 3D adhesive. I didn't want them to get bent while I was stitching. I double matted my focal photo and added chipboard photo corners. All other photo placements follow the sketch.

The foam alphabets were just a little bright for my layout, so I used an old dried out ink pad and distressed them a bit to tone down the color.

I placed my polka dot spider at the corner of the photo as the sketch suggested, added googly eyes and attached him to the spider web. I used 3D Adhesive to give him dimension.

Allison truly outdid herself. This week's sketch has so many possibilities. The large diecut shape could be replaced with an Easter egg, football, basketball, dinosaur, Christmas tree, turkey, Fall tree, pumpkin or a rocket ship. So many ideas, so little time. I hope you will have fun coming up with some great layouts and share them with us in the coming weeks. On this layout I created a sun with my Cricut and paired it with a flower border.

I inked the edges of the sun and stitched around it with brown nylon upholstery thread. I adhered it to the layout and used 3D adhesive to give the sun rays dimension. I also added zigzag stitching along the stripe on the left page.

To create the flower border, I used two sizes of flowers and alternated them as I fed them through my sewing machine. I placed threaded buttons in the center of the larger flowers and then attached the border to the layout. I used 3D adhesive to adhere the smaller flowers for added dimension.

I adjusted four of the photos to 4x6". This resulted in only having to crop one of my photos on the entire layout!

For the title, I used two different sizes of alphabets. I stitched across the top edge of the smaller alphabet letters for added interest.

A Scrapbook Milestone.

I'm so excited, but find it hard to believe. If all goes well, I will have two cards and one layout published in the December 2011 issues of Cards Magazine and Cricut Magazine. This sketch was so much fun to work with, that hardly changed a thing.

*I used a sticker for my title.

*I stitched around my large star.

*I used journal strips, instead of writing my journaling on the star.

*I layered a few of the stars on kraft paper for added interest. Using a Paper Piercer, I poked two holes in each star and threaded jute through them. I then attached them with 3D adhesive. I also added buttons to two of the stars.

We celebrated a fun-filled 4th of July weekend at Grand Lake and enjoyed the Duck Creek fireworks on the 3rd. It was so hot and the lake was plagued with "Blue-Green Algae". I didn't want to take a chance with my kids, so we stayed off the lake and stayed in the pool, played on the new slip-n-slide and visited the splash park in Grove.

We then traveled to MeMe and Pappy's house on Monday and enjoyed fried chicken, homemade ice cream and fireworks. My boys were so worn out that it took about 3 days to recover from all the excitement. I think I'm still recovering.

This is a layout I did for my LSS, Simply Scrapbooks in Claremore, Oklahoma. We are currently having a challenge at the store using a sketch by Allison Davis creator of "Sketches for Scrapbooking". If you have never used her sketches, they're an amazing sketch book resources. You can find them at Simply Scrapbooks. Come in and see the different layouts the staff created using this sketch.

I started this layout by punching out about a million stars from scraps of my Echo Park Little Boy collection, also available at Simply Scrapbooks. I then strategically placed them across my kraft background. I then stitched down the middle of the stars. I loved how patriotic it looked when I was finished with that step, that I rushed to find my Independence Day photos. Then I knew the direction I wanted my layout to take.

The final step was making my flag. I needed to find or make an embellishment to fit the space on the sketch that resembled the flourish. I thought about making a flag out of cardstock. I then realized that the blue polka dot paper from the Little Boy collection resembled the "stars" and the red and white diagonal paper could be straightened up to resemble the stripes on the flag. I then attached the papers to a wooden dowel that I had just purchased for another project. I then added diamond Stickles to the "stars". This layout was a lot of fun to make.

I get kind of excited about layouts like this. I used scraps from about 4 different paper collections of Echo Park. I love using leftovers to create something amazing.

I created this one-page layout from last weeks card sketch at http://www.sketchsupport.com/ . I used a favorite photo of me and my husband that we took at an OSU football game. We placed the camera on the edge of our truck and set the timer. The camera must have moved a bit which made the photo blurry. I loved the photo so much that I used Photoshop Elements to make it look like an oil painting. It's not perfect, but I was glad that I was able to salvage the photo.

The first thing I did was stitch a square around my background. This created a more cozy, intimated layout. (I think I scraplifted that from Noey's layout from last week. Isn't she awesome.)

I double matted and stitched around the photo, as shown in the sketch to add extra texture and detail. I positioned the title above and below, so I wouldn't cover the photo.

I layered the borders and added zig zag stitching. I finished the layout by adding my flower.

This was made using about seven layers of circles and a flower with a brad. I moistened the paper circles and crinkled them up. Then I used my paper piercer and added my brad.

I layered five different sized circles to create my sucker/flowers. I used 3D foam adhesive to give them dimension. They started out as suckers, but ended up looking like flowers.

For this layout I switched things up just a bit. The most noticeable thing that I changed was the photos. I used 3- 4x6" photos and matted them on yellow pattern paper. I also eliminated the 3 smaller 2x2" photos and placed my journaling and embellishment in that location.

To the borders at the top, I added and additional strip that measures only 1/8" wide. The layout was needing another pop of color on the layout, but I didn't want it to look "too pink" since it was about my little boy. I prefer to call it "happy red". That way my husband doesn't get upset at me for using pink. I also added bows to the tops of the banner.

For the embellishments, I stacked 4 sizes of circles and slightly pinched them to create dimension. Notice again that I used a bit of "happy red". I then added stickles to the yellow layers to create continuity with the glittery title.

My family and I started our camping adventure about a year ago. We have had so much fun with our boys. They enjoy everything from gathering wood to build a campfire to having a sleepover with each other in their RV bedroom. I really enjoyed scrapbooking these pictures using Allison's sketch. They make me smile every time I see them.

The first change I made to this sketch was making the square background 11 x 12". Extending the background to the left by one inch allowed me to use three 3.5 x 5" photos down the center of my layout instead of just one 4 x 6". By making this change, I had to move my journaling to the right and eliminate the florish.

Since the theme of my layout was camping, I used my Sew Easy tool and created the blanket stitching around the brown background.

For the border I layered pattern paper and the scalloped border and then added craft wood chips for a woodsy feel. I used 3D adhesive to attach my cardstock stickers and then added stickles for detail. I then finished it with a jute bow and journaling.

I loved the bright and cheery sun on this weeks sketch and knew right away I wanted to use it to make a layout about my parents farm. I had to adjust the circle. I used a 5" circle instead of the suggested 2" and then cut strips in random widths for the sun rays as shown on the sketch. I used yellow cardstock as my base and then attached the strips of the lemon paper on top. I then stitched between the sun rays on the cardstock and attached the sun to kraft paper.

I hand cut the green curve using a template I made earlier this year based on a previous sketch by Allison. I loved that sketch so much that I hid my curved template away for later use. I just love circles and curves on layouts.

I then tucked in my red fence border. To get the fence to curve, I simply snipped the bottom of the border and bent it gently. I held the fence in place by using my sewing machine to stitch around the green patterned paper.

Journaling reads: "It's so nice to be at my parents farm at sunset. Jackson and Mawmaw enjoyed looking at the cows and the other boys enjoyed running around in the barn. Fall 2010"

Here are two cards I made using one of the newer collection from Basic Grey, "Life of the Party". These cards are part of a fun "Fabulous Friday Crop" held once a month at Simply Scrapbooks in Claremore, Oklahoma. This card was created for Add-On sketch week at Sketch Support. The original sketch is of an umbrella. The inspiration for the parachute came from the Hanna Andersson children's catalog. I saw a baby boy jacket with a cute appliqued monkey and parachute.

This is my layout from two-page sketch week on Sketch Support. I switched it around a bit and made it into a one-page. Notice the fish hook and fishing pole I made from a popsicle stick and twine. I actually thought about going outside and finding a stick to use on my layout, but a posicle stick was laying on my table from some rub-ons I had used. I enjoyed using these fun papers I bought a long time ago.

Oh...and just so you know. Cooper wasn't feeling very well on this day. He usually loves going out on the boat. Jackson usually takes a nap. It's really pretty funny. He likes the sound of the water and motor. He usually gets comfy and snoozes. Ultimate white noise. Hayden is just all over the place. And I'm usually hanging on to some part of all three, trying to make sure they don't fall overboard.

A couple of weeks ago we had a special feature on "Sketch Support" that highlighted our children scrapbooking. This is my 5 1/2 year old son Hayden. He was so excited to stay up late and use all my scrapbooking tools.

Scrapbooking with my son turned out to be really enjoyable. I was amazed by how easy it was using one of Allison's sketches. I have a tendency of being a control freak, so letting my son loose with my scrapbooking supplies kind of scares me. Hayden was able to look at the pictures and follow the directions without either one of us getting stressed out. I was excited to see how much he enjoyed it and how pleased he was with his scrapbook page.

To simplify the process I picked out a set of photos and had Hayden choose his favorite pictures. I then let him choose a paper collection that he liked. I cut all the paper with my trimmer, but let him use my sharp scissors to cut out the journal card. I was amazed by his cutting skills at age 5.

I gave him the sketch and explained that these were the directions. He decided where everything would go on the page and put adhesive on everything (literally). I think I still have glue on me. He listed all the steps for eating a noodle and I wrote them down. He also was very concerned with the little word strips around the page. He took the sketch very literally and made sure that we added them. Allison's sketches are amazingly easy to use, no matter what your age.

Play-doh Monsters

During the snow storm that hit Oklahoma this winter I was home with my 3 boys for about 14 days straight. I knew we would probably start to go crazy, so I made a "plan" of things to do with my 2, 3 and 5 year old. I tried to do a couple of special things each day to make the time more fun and engaging. On this day we played with Play-doh and made monsters. We had so much fun. I realized that I had never taken photos of us playing with Play-doh. I tried to take photos of all the things we did, so I could scrapbook them later.

It was a really enjoyable time with my family. My husband was able to spend a few days at home during the blizzard, so I was able to cook a lot more while he watched the boys. I realized that when I have the time and someone to help watch the kids that I truly enjoy cooking.

Echo Park "Playground" Cards

Here are some cards using the new Echo Park Collection "Playground". I'm including the instruction so you can make some for yourself.

Cut white cardstock to 4 ¼ x 11. Folded card measures 4 1/4 x 5 ½.

“Happy Summer”

*Background- 4 1/4 x 5 ½”

*Create a 12” scallop border from the green polka dot paper using a die cut machine or a border punch. Fold the border and attach to bottom of card. Trim and fold as necessary to get it to fit on the card.

*Tie ribbon twine onto bottom of card, threading through button and tie knot. Add attach button with adhesive.

*Add tree sticker element and then add sentiment to the tree.

“Here comes the sun”

*Background measures 4 ¼ x 4 ½” (strategically cut from paper. Add faux stitching around the edge.

*Cut two grass borders, 1 x 4 ¼ and 1 ½ x 4 ¼”. Fray the edges as shown, cutting some on a diagonal. Attach to bottom of card and add sentiment.

*Kites measure 1 x 1 ½’. Fold them into the diamond shape. Add baker’s twine. Tie an extra knot around the top of each. Attach with 3D adhesive. With a pen draw lines onto kite.

“Happy Birthday”

*Cut polka dot paper to 2 x 4 1/4”

* Cut strip paper to 4 x 4 ¼”

*Tie a bow and add tiny alphabet stickers for your sentiment.

“You are my sunshine”

*Background- Cut Kraft paper to 4 x 5 1/4

*Cut flower border from “border strip” paper. Trim around the tops of the flowers and cut to 4” wide.

*Loop a 5” piece of ribbon so that it measures 2”. Repeat so that you have 3 ribbon loops. Attach with liquid glue or other adhesive.

*Thread button with baker’s twine and attach to flower.

*Crochet or braid Bakers twine so that it measures 3 inches. This is for the flower stem.

*Punch two 1” circle from the green paper. Crumple and pinch them to create the flower leaves.

* Cut sentiment from sentiment sheet and attach to Kraft paper. Trim mat ¼” wider than sentiment. Attach with 3D foam adhesive.

*With a pen, create faux stitching around background.

“It’s your day”

*Cut number paper 1 ½ x 4 ¼

*Cut polka dot paper 4 ¼ x 4

*Trim a row of hearts to 4 ¼”

*Cut out journal card, mount with 3D adhesive, wrap baker’s twine around bottom and add alphabet stickers. Add faux stitching with a pen to heart border.

Card Sketch Week!

You've got to get a copy of this weeks card sketch at Sketch Support. It is so cute and it is great for using up all kinds of scrap paper. For the first card, I actually used the cover sheet that shows you all the patterns that are in the package and cut it into smaller sections. I would have felt bad using brand new sheets of paper for tiny little strips of paper like the ones shown.

"Happy Birthday"

For this card I added pattern paper to the background and stitched a border around the card. I then machine stitched on the candles and hand stitched the flames on top. Instead of the stripped paper I substituted ribbon and added the sentiment.

On this card, I switched out the candles for balloons. I used kraft paper as a background. With a pencil, I lightly drew my strings on the card. I used my sewing machine and stitched the strings. I probably should have practiced a bit beforehand, but I just winged it. Some of those loop-de-loops look like I was intoxicated at the time. I added 3D foam adhesive to some of the balloons to make them stand out. Added felt ribbon and topped it with a sentiment.

1. When it comes to scrapbooking, my style is best described as... clean and linear.

2. While I am creating, my space is usually... cluttered with sketches, paper collections, photos and my sewing machine. I always clean up between projects though.

3. I love using sketches because... I can focus on the fun papers and embellishment. I don't have to spend my limited scrapbooking time planning the page layout or trying to figure out how to get 12 pictures on a two-page layout. The result, is that I get my photos scrapbooked and in albums much faster than before I started using Allison's sketches.

4. My top five things to have near me at the crafty table is... Distress chalk ink, sewing machine, ribbon, paper punches and Cricut.

5. When I'm not scrapping you can usually find me... doing mommy things, like playing with my boys, cooking and doing laundry.

I used an online "word cloud" (collage) program, www.wordle.net to create this Valentine's card. You simply type in the words you want to use and it creates a collage for you. You can then make changes to the font and color and randomize the collage as much as you want. I chose 2 shades of red, pink and gray. It was really fun to play with. It would be an awesome way to add fun journaling to scrapbook pages also. If you just print, it will print on standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper, which was too large for my project. For this card, I clicked on properties for my printer and chose to print 2 per page, so that it would be card size.

I hand cut my collage into the shape of a heart and attached it to pink cardstock. I had to snip the inside of the pink velvet scalloped ribbon to make it curve into the heart shape.

I attached ribbon in various colors of pink and red to the card base and then stitched in place. I attached the heart to the middle of the card and topped with a black and white polka dot bow. The weight of the ribbon and stitching was heavy, so I had to line the inside of the card with cardstock to support it. This also hid the stitching, creating a clean finish to the inside of the card.

Our Snowy Snowman

This is the snowman we build in our back yard a couple of days ago. Last night we endured another snow storm that gave us another 8 inches of snow on top of the 17 inches we already had.

This morning, in a very disturbed voice Hayden said, "Our snowman is melting!"
I replied, "What makes you think that?"
He said, "His face is falling off."
I then clarified, "It's not falling off, it's just covered in 8 inches of snow."

I love experiencing all the little things through the eyes of my children.

(This photo was taken with my iphone and then enhanced with my new app from FX Photo Studio. It's like having Photoshop on my phone. It makes bad pictures look so much better. I love it.)

Here are my 3 cards I made based on the new sketch at Sketch Support . Jillibean Soup was our sponsor.

Supplies- Pattern paper and journaling sprouts: Jillibean Soup; Alphabet: American crafts; tools: creative memories heart punch; other: cardstock, machine stitching and ribbon

For this card I wanted to make this 3 dimensional pink heart and decided to use a journaling sprout attached to a larger square as the main foundation for the card. I added the background green gingham paper to contrast the pink instead of using the 3 strips of paper across the card. I decided to turn the card vertically to accomodate the alphabet stickers. I finished off the card by stitching around the edges of the paper and down the middle of the heart for added interest. I then topped off the heart with a pink bow.

Supplies- Pattern paper, Corrugated Alphabet and Bakers Twine: Jillibean Soup; Tools: Stampin' Up and EK circle punches and We R Memory Keepers Corner Chomper and brad setter/paper piercer; Other: machine stitching and brads

When I first saw the product for this challenge, it made me feel bright and happy like flowers do... so I knew I wanted to make paper flowers for my card. I attached three 1/4 inch strips to the card and zig-zag stitched between the strips. I attached my squares to the left side of the card to allow space for my flowers. I hand-stitched with Bakers Twine around the corrugated letters and attached to the card.

Flower tutorial: To make these flowers, punch 8 circles out of different patterned papers. Mist them with water and crinkle. Then open them up enough to stack them. Use a paper piercer to poke a hole in the center and attach a brad. Fold all the circles to the middle and let dry a bit. Then fluff. I used 3 different sized circle punches for my flowers. Instead of cirlce punches, you can use your Cricut or any other die cutting system to cut your circles. You can also use scalloped circles or flowers for very pretty results.

"I feel at home when I'm with you." I wanted to make a quilt-like card that had a warm cozy feel to it. I found several different patterns of paper in shades of green and cut them to 1 inch. I attached them to a piece of paper and then zig-zag stitched around them. Instead of using paper strips attached to the card base, I used one of the decorative stitches on my sewing machine and made 3 scalloped lines across the card. I finished it with ribbon tied in a bow and alphabet letters.

On the Farm

This layout was based on a sketch over at http://www.sketchsupport.com/ . I typically create two-page layouts, but I really wanted to use this sketch. I had to figure out a way to get 9 pictures on a layout. In order to make it work, I had to stretch the sketch and adjust the photo placement.

This was Jackson's first Day at Mommy's Day Out. At first we started him going just one day a week. He was excited and ran in and started playing. After a few weeks, he started realizing that on other days, his brothers were getting to go to school to play and he would cry that he was having to go with mommy. I talked it over with Chuck and he agreed that he could go 2 days a week. He was 20 months olds.

Warm Memories

These are pictures I took a few days ago when we had our first snow of the season. It was barely enough to cover the ground, but just enough for the boys to play in. Hayden kept asking me if it was Winter yet. He thought that it had to snow for it to be considered Winter. The funniest part was when they all hit the ground and started making snow angels, which to me looked like dirt and mud angels because the snow hadn't fully covered the ground.

Hayden had pretty good luck with the new sled Santa brought for Christmas, but the younger two boys ended up just rolling down the hill in the Tonka truck.

Good snow days only come a couple of times a year. The boys made the most of this one, complete with our sad little snowman.

These are some valentine cards that I made using collections from Echo Park. I love their paper. These little cards measure 3x3 and are meant to be handed out at parties or attached to gifts.

I had to remove this layout, because it is getting published in Cricut Magazine Families Idea Book due out early January 2012.

This is one of the layouts I did for Sketch Support. Visit the web site to print out your own copy of the sketch.

I love the movement and energy of this sketch. It was perfect, since Jackson was just learning how to walk. I changed the photo arrangement because I already had my main 5x7 photo printed in the landscape orientation rather than portrait as shown in the sketch. I expanded the background to accomodate this change. I stitched on both sides of the background and also the bottom to make it look like the train was on the tracks. I also switched the locations of my title and embellishment. My arrows looked like they needed a place to sit.

Here are the adjusted measurements:

Background: 9 1/4 x 11" on both sides, with the wavy line cut along the bottom.
Red photo mat: 6 x 8"
Cream photo mat: 5 1/4 x 7 1/4"
Striped strips are 11 x 1/2", 10 3/4 x 1/4"
Photos on left page: 5 x 7" , 2- 3x4's
Photos on right page: 2- 4 x 6's, 3 x 5"
Journal block: 2 3/4 x 3", cut into 1/4" inch strips
The background is 1/2" inch from the top.
